Headshot Photography Is A Specialty Within Photography: It’s Not Just A Headshot!

Business and Acting Headshots Taken At North Raleigh Studio

Same Client Photographed Minutes Apart

"I need a headshot to update my LinkedIn profile" is one of the most popular statements that I hear on a regular basis as a headshot photographer. But there is more to it than just a basic headshot to check off your TO DO LIST.

The two images above were shot within minutes of each other of the same guy. Yes, they are two different looks that can be used for two different purposes. That is one reason that you may want to maximize your time in front of the camera with a professional headshot photographer.

A headshot may seem simple which is likely why most any photographer that has a camera says they do headshots. However, their core specialty may actually be weddings or families. Just because a photographer is great at weddings and families doesn't mean that same photographer will be great at headshots unless the photographer is used to working with one person in front of the camera on a regular basis.

For example, I don't do weddings. Could I shoot a wedding? Probably! However, the photographer who focuses on weddings as a core part of his or her business and actually shoots weddings on a regular basis will outshoot me when it comes to a wedding.

On the other hand, I do a lot and I mean a lot of headshots on a very regular basis. I consider headshots a core specialty. I started doing professional headshots in 1987. By default, that makes me experienced at headshots, but it doesn't mean my work will appeal to everyone that needs a professional headshot. I get that and I accept that. My point is to simply get you thinking about headshots beyond just "I need a headshot to update my LinkedIn profile."

When choosing a headshot photographer, try not to base it on the lowest price in the market. If you like the photographers work, let price (to a point) become secondary. In the Raleigh market, you'll likely find a lot of photographers in the $100 to $300 range for a headshot. Also, it is important to consider the experience of the photographer as it relates to headshots. It is completely different working one-on-one with an individual vs. doing a family portrait vs. photographing a wedding. For me, I'm extremely comfortable working one-on-one with someone for a headshot but family portraits are not my forte. I actually only focus on the commercial use side of photography.
